HENDON FAMILY CHRONICLES

JOHN MARION HENDON

~Son of John Madison Hendon
~

John Marion Hendon, son of John Madison Hendon and Elizabeth Baker, was born in Cleburne County, Alabama on 12 Dec 1861. Elizabeth Baker Hendon died circa 1875 in Cleburne County, Alabama when John was about 15 years of age. Three of John's siblings were younger than he. John Madison Hendon married second, Sarah A. McDowell, on 22 Nov 1877 in Cleburne County, Alabama. Sarah became step-mother to seven children, six of whom were 8 -19 years of age.

John Marion Hendon married Adaline Naomi Gross* on 19 May 1891 in Dekalb County, Alabama. Information on Adaline Gross and her family has been ambiguous, probably due to the birth of her first child, fathered by a man named Hawkins, before she married John and also because "Gross" has been mis-spelled; sometimes it is Groce or Grase, etc. All census and marriage records spell it GROSS.

Adaline Gross had a son, Claud Arnold Hawkins, born 13 Mar 1886 probably in Paulding County. As noted above, in 1880 the Gross family was living near Dallas, Georgia, Dist 161, dwelling #174.

Note: I've found no record that John Marion Hendon actually adopted his stepson, Claud A. Hawkins. Claud likely just took the Hendon name which was commonly done at that time. He was "Claud A. Hendon" when he married Annie Lou Hagler in Paulding County, Georgia on 28 Dec 1902. In 1918, he also registered for the draft as "Claud A. Hawkins."

Claud Arnold (Hawkins) Hendon, born Mar 1886, Paulding County, Georgia, died 25 Nov 1923, Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia. His wife, Annie Lou Hagler was born 17 Jun 1886, Selma, Dallas County, Alabama, died 25 Mar 1977, Cobb County, Georgia. Both Claud and Annie are buried at Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery, Cobb County, Georgia.
