Son of James Hendon

This Josiah has been a mystery to so many. All we knew of him was his marriage to “Hawkins Pennington” in Wake County, NC on 15 May 1832. Her name was actually “Mary”. The “Hawkins” was likely her mother’s last name. Josiah, son of James Hendon and Elizabeth  Andrews, was born circa 1810 in Wake County, North Carolina. James Hendon, born circa 1770 in Bladen County, NC, was the son of Isham Hendon and Keziah Johnson.
James Hendon was an heir in his father Isham's Will dated 26 Jan 1803. Henry Andrews (brother of Elizabeth Andrews) was a witness to the Will.
James Hendon married Elizabeth Andrews in Wake County, NC on 15 May 1793. Elizabeth was the daughter of David Andrews. Her father’s 1823 Will stated ".....and lastly, I nominate and appoint my son William Andrews and my son-in-law James Hendon and my  grandson Josiah Hendon as Executors to This, my Last Will and Testament, replacing all others.”
In testimony whereof, I have sworn by my hand and affixed my seal this 28th day of April 1823.
                                                                                                                  (signed) David Andrews  (SEAL)
                                                                                                           Wake County, North Carolina

Heirs included in David Andrew’s Will were “my daughter Elizabeth Hendon, wife of James Hendon”; his sons, William, David Jr. and Henry Andrews;  daughter, Martha Johnson; and some grandchildren. No wife was mentioned, which indicates she probably had died. David Andrew's Will was probated in Aug 1827.

Another reason I’m positive this Josiah was the son of James Hendon and Elizabeth Andrews -- Elizabeth’s brother, William Andrews, named his brother-in-law, Josiah Hendon, as an heir in his Will dated 20 Feb 1828. As previously mentioned, Josiah married Mary Hawkins Pennington in Wake County, North Carolina on 15 May 1832.
Josiah moved his family to Tennessee by 1840 and settled in Bedford County. According to 1850-1920 Tennessee census records,
Josiah’s first three
children were born in North Carolina.

Tennessee's cheap land and fertile soil drew thousands of new settlers, including several Hendon families by 1860.

Some of the counties that drew the Hendons are indicated below:

Josiah Hendon’s last child was born about 1842, but Josiah died by 1850 because he was not included in the Bedford County census of that year. Josiah A. Hendon is likely buried with some of his family at Mount Willow Cemetery.

The widow Mary H. (Pennington) Hendon was again enumerated in Bedford County in 1870 (as “head of household”) and 1880 (living with the Stephens family). Mary died in Bedford County 28 Jul 1894 and is buried near some of her children at Willow Mount Cemetery, Bedford County, Tennessee.
